In-person Therapy in Montclair and Virtual Across NJ

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy  is a form of psychotherapy that views the mind as a collection of distinct “parts” or subpersonalities, guided by a core, undamaged Self. When we learn to develop a trusting relationship with the core Self, it knows how to heal and lead the system.

What Can IFS Therapy Help With?

  • Inner conflict, self-criticism, and shame

  • Childhood trauma and attachment wounds

  • Anxiety, overthinking, and perfectionism

  • People-pleasing and difficulty setting boundaries

  • Emotional triggers and recurring relationship patterns

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or your emotions

  • Parts of yourself that feel unworthy, abandoned, or afraid

  • Difficulty making decisions or trusting yourself

  • Feeling stuck despite years of self-reflection or traditional talk therapy

Core Concepts in Internal Family System (IFS)

Our innate center of calm, curiosity, compassion, and clarity, capable of guiding our inner system with confidence and care.

Self

Protective parts that work proactively to maintain control, avoid vulnerability, and prevent painful emotions from resurfacing.

Manager Parts

Parts of ourselves that hold painful emotions, past wounds, or traumatic experiences and are often pushed away to protect us from overwhelming feelings.

Firefighter Parts

Protective parts that react when painful emotions become overwhelming, often turning to impulsive behaviors, anger, or distractions to quickly relieve emotional distress.

Exiled Parts

How Internal Family System (IFS) Works

Recognizing Your Parts:

Learn to identify different thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations as individual parts of yourself rather than allowing them to define who you are.

Cultivating Compassion:

Instead of resisting or trying to eliminate difficult emotions and behaviors, approach your parts with curiosity and compassion, recognizing the protective roles they may have developed.

Reconnecting with Your Self:

Access your core Self to guide your inner system with clarity. As protective parts begin to feel safe, they can soften their roles, creating space for deeper healing and the release of old emotional burdens.

FROM INNER CONFLICT TO INNER HARMONY

You don't have to fight against yourself to become who you want to be.
